Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford began performing in her teen years and joined an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her show in 1996.
